descriptive text herepopup

The Program:

This program is being helmed by the Martha Liebert Library, thanks to a grant from the City of Bernalillo. This performance series will last two years, though individual commitments can be made. The temporary goal is to nurture an appreciation and respect of Renaissance poetry performed in the traditional manner it was originally intended. The ultimate goal is to develop the students’ talents and abilities to where they can comfortably perform a full-length Shakespeare play in the future.

Shakespearean Sonnets, Monologues & Dramatics:

This short class focuses on students learning three to five Shakespearean sonnets to add to their repertoire. In class students will do vocal exercises, study iambic pentameter, and discuss basic recitation and performance techniques.

The rehearsals will be on Thursday afternoons from 6pm-8pm at the Martha Liebert Library, with free performances at the library. The purpose of this class is primarily as preparation for the larger production that will be in Spring 2025. This class will get students comfortable with the language as well as with performing live in front of an audience.

“Treasures of the English Renaissance” A Presentation of Poetry, Music & Dance:

This class centers on the study and rehearsal of Renaissance poetry including luminaries such as Sir Thomas Wyatt, Sir Phillip Sidney and Christopher Marlowe. The presentation of these memorized poems will include accompaniment by student musicians and will culminate in a youth performance that will bring together all primary elements: verse, music and dance. Performances will be held free at Sue Cleveland Theater in Rio Rancho with dates/times TBA.

The Basics:

I really would like to find the right individuals for this who are committed and truly have an appreciation of classical literature and its performance. It would provide an opportunity for students to get in front of an audience and share poetry from a bygone era as it was originally intended to be presented. Fluent bilingual students are encouraged to participate, as part of the presentation’s focus is to cover all of the countries that were involved in the Renaissance and include sonnets and poems being read in different languages, if possible.
