What is the Summer Reading Program?

The Summer Reading Program is an event at the library that will run from June 2nd to August 2nd. During the event, you can complete different reading challenges at the library to earn prizes and raffle tickets! We will also be having some wonderful special events for all ages.

 

 

Who can participate?

Everyone!

We will have three age groups participating in the Summer Reading Challenge:

  • Children: Ages 0-11
  • Young Adults: Ages 12-18
  • Adults: Over 18

Each age group will have their own reading logs and challenges to complete for prizes. We will also have special events geared towards each age group!

 

 

How do I participate?

Come on down to the library and we can get you registered, starting on June 2nd.

Once the event begins on June 2nd, and PDF copies of all reading logs will be available here for download!

We have packed our calendar full of fun events. There’s something for everyone!

Weekly Programs (free, no registration required)

  • Teen Activity Mondays: age 12-18; 2pm; June 2, 9, 16, 23; July 7, 14, 21, 28
  • R4 Creative Tuesdays: all ages; 10am; June 3, 10, 17, 24; July 8, 15, 22, 29
  • BioPark Wednesdays: all ages; 10am; June 4, 11, 18, 25; July 9, 16, 23, 30
  • Explora Thursdays: age 5-14; 10am; June 5, 12, 19, 25; July 10, 17, 24, 31
  • Friday Morning Toddler Storytime: all ages; 10am; June 6, 13, 20, 27; July 11, 18, 25
  • Crafternoon Fridays: all ages; 2pm; June 6, 13, 20, 27; July 11, 18, 25

June Special Events (free, no registration required)

  • Summer Reading Kickoff Party! all ages; 10am; June 7; Come register for Summer Reading Program so you can start winning prizes. Clan Tynker Circus will be performing and there will be plenty of delicious treats for the whole family!
  • Father’s Day Activity! all ages; 10am; June 14; Please join us in celebrating our dads! Bring your dad along for a light brunch and a fun craft.
  • Rock Art and Storytime! all ages; 10am; June 21; Explore a tabletop touch-and-feel museum of New Mexico artifacts, hear about the rock art that has been preserved in our area, and make your own rock art! This program is put on by the New Mexico Office of Archaeology Studies. We will also be joined by a ranger from the Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites, doing a Ranger Read and Learn for the little ones!
  • Shakespeare Performance! all ages; 3pm; June 27; See an excerpt of Midsummer Night’s Dream by the talented New Mexico Young Actors as part of their Summer Shakespeare Fest.
  • Painted Rocks Workshop! all ages; 10am; June 28; This summer we want to add a pop of color to the garden at the Bernalillo Community Museum! Come to this workshop to decorate a rock that will live in the garden all summer long. All materials provided.

July Special Events (free, no registration required)

  • Tiny Paintings Workshop! all ages; 10am; July 12; What will you paint on your tiny canvas: a flower? a green chile? We can’t wait to see your creativity! All materials provided.
  • Kids Concert! all ages; 2pm; July 17; Award winning Children’s musician, Andy Mason, has been creating and playing songs for children and their families for over 10 years! Andy’s family-friendly music keeps the attention of children and adults alike, who will no doubt come away from Andy’s show having learned something too.
  • Nature Button Making and Storytime Workshop! all ages; 10am; July 19; Join the library and our friends from the Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites to learn about nature, hear a fun story, and make your own buttons! All materials provided.
  • Bookmarks Workshop! all ages; 10am; July 26; Get ready for your next read with your very own customized bookmark! We will have plenty of materials and styles for you to choose from. All materials provided.
  • End of Summer Party! all ages; 10am; August 2; We are wrapping up our Summer Reading Program with a BIG bash! Ka Lā Kapu Polynesian Dance School will put on a beautiful performance, and L+L Hawaiian Barbecue will be in the house to provide a taste of the islands. We will be awarding reading log prizes, giving out raffle prizes, and celebrating a wonderful summer of reading!

Registration-Required Events (free)

  • Bernalillo’s Adult Paint Nights! ages 16+; 5pm; June 12 and July 10; Come in and enjoy an adult only paint night where you can enjoy snacks, paint and relax. We are kickstarting our adult paint nights with a book bag creation session: create one nature-themed book bag per person to take home! All materials provided. Spaces are limited to 20 people, so sign up quick!
  • Baila! Baila! Summer Ballet Folklorico Program! grades 1-12; Saturday mornings; Our friends at Baila! Baila! will be teaching a series of summer classes on traditional Mexican Folk Dance! At the end of the classes, students will put on a performance at the library. For more information, call 505-867-1440. The first day of class will be May 31.
